Reliable results through controlled processes

Galliker Transport AG is a third-generation family business. Since its foundation in 1918, the company has developed from a regional one-man operation into an internationally active logistics service provider with 3,500 employees in 21 branches and 6 countries throughout Europe.

Energy and environmentally friendly infrastructures are important for Galliker. The ideal location of the company headquarters in Dagmersellen in terms of transport links was therefore used to initially expand the range of services in the fresh and frozen products and healthcare logistics business areas. And two years later to add a warehouse for dry products based on the same model but almost three times the size.

Automation in conjunction with sophisticated strategies at process level ensures maximum availability and performance, on the basis of which we can further optimize and future-proof our range of services in the interests of our customers.

Solution for the customer

Stoecklin was the partner for both significant growth steps with which Galliker Transport wanted to meet the growing demand in the frozen and dry product segment.

In 2015, Stoecklin built a four-aisle deep-freeze high-bay warehouse with 9,200 pallet storage locations for Galliker Transport AG and supplied four MASTer series storage and retrieval machines. Stöcklin also installed the entire conveyor technology lines, including distribution carts, lifting equipment and elevator systems.

Right from the start, the chosen system solution was able to fully meet all requirements in terms of availability, ergonomics, process and work safety, while at the same time keeping operating costs moderate. Once the logistics concept had been developed, it was brought back to life without any significant modifications, following the example of its 'smaller brother'.

Capacities for dry goods - such as chocolate, pasta and canned goods - were significantly increased in 2017. The nine-aisle high-bay warehouse comprises over 26,100 new pallet spaces. The nine storage and retrieval machines from the MASTer series achieve travel speeds of up to 2.5 m/s and lifting speeds of up to 0.63 m/s at peak times.

Other central components are the infeed and outfeed transport system, transfer carriages, multi-station conveyors, rope lifting devices, pallet labeling systems as well as high-speed doors and airlocks, which reliably separate the special environments (deep-freeze, fire protection). Lifts are used to transport load carriers to the workstations for order picking and customer-specific packaging and labeling. A new material flow computer (MFR) visualizes the system status in real time.

The fully expanded, fully automated ambient and deep-freeze high-bay warehouse in Dagmersellen on the border with Altishofen went into operation on schedule in August 2017. The system, which is divided into three climate zones and designed for maximum availability and performance, operates under high load ten hours a day, five days a week. At peak times, a storage and retrieval capacity of 220 pallets per hour is possible across the entire system.

The realization of this overall project was not an everyday challenge. Performance and availability are one side of the coin. At the same time, detailed specifications had to be met with regard to occupational safety. We mastered this in close cooperation with those responsible at Galliker.

Benefits for the customer

The successful project partnership between Galliker and Stoecklin in food and pharmaceutical logistics covers a temperature range of minus 26° degrees in the deep-freeze high-bay warehouse and +10° degrees to +16° degrees in the fresh food and ambient area. The high-bay warehouses, storage and retrieval machines, conveyor systems and software solutions offer the highest level of quality assurance, product safety and occupational safety. The system solutions from Stoecklin strengthen the range of services and growth of Galliker Transport AG as one of the leading logistics service providers in Switzerland.
