Project focus

Storage and conveyor technology as well as digital management and control for automated archiving and handling of library collections

Scope

Construction of a 15 m (49 ft) high, 70 m (230 ft) long, six-aisle automated small parts block warehouse for 112,000 containers and 3.1 million media; including six BOXer RGB for double-deep storage, inertization locks, four put-to-light-supported picking workstations and IT connection of the partner libraries

Benefits

An ideal solution for space-saving storage and efficient management of less frequently used stock

Highlights

Unique rack throughput of 72 containers per appliance per hour and up to 400 containers/h in the loop; free-standing rack system installed decoupled from the platform for earthquake safety reasons; modular solution that can be expanded many times over

Compact - Central - Special

Expansion of the logistics center ensures rapid growth

Lack of space is driving innovation. With the planned opening of the Lucerne Central and University Library set for February 2016 the University of Basel, the Solothurn Central Library, and the Zurich Central and University Library moved a large part of their holding to the new storage library in Buron, Lucerne. "Merging collections relieves the burden on the partner libraries, costs can be saved in the long term and the space freed up can be used for other useful purposes," emphasizes Managing Director Mike Märki. Other partners may follow. This is made possible by the modular, scalable total storage solution from Stoecklin.

Solution from Stoecklin

At the core of the earthquake-proof storage building is a small parts warehouse that is fully automated. Storage and retrieval capabilities from our BOXer series ensure controlled dynamics and volume-optimized storage. The small parts warehouse is inerted for fire protection purposes, and is connected to the administration wing and order picking under normal conditions via an air shaft with a connected airlock. In order to reliably store and retrieve delivered media, the ergonomic picking workstations were equipped with put-to-light technology and an integrated profile and weight check, which indicates errors and ejects the corresponding containers for inspection.

We have implemented a special solution here to guarantee maximum performance, security and availability for a very special type of goods.

In focus: IT-supported process optimization

For intelligent order processing, the Aleph library software, a module of the Stoecklin logIS Software Suite, works with the partner libraries to manage the control of the entire material flow -- from containers and storage locations to storage and retrieval processes.

The system calculates optimum routes and travel times for the storage and retrieval machines - for the best possible management of the double-deep storage compartments - and ensures that orders are optimized across all ordering parties: The retrieval positions transmitted by the library partners are reserved when the order is processed. The warehouse management system uses this information to create lists that also take into account departure times of postal or courier services in order to optimally coordinate the picking of consignments with the transport routes.

The shared holdings continue to be managed by the library, which has initiated the transfer of its items to the storage library. Notifications regarding loans and returns are automatically forwarded to them.

Benefits for the customer

Customers ordering from home or at the library can now be confident that their desired book or newspaper/magazine will be ready for collection at the correct location no later than 24 hours after placing the order.
